The idea of BITAC’s business arose due to the working experience of both cofounders in a reference laboratory. Auncovered need was identified relating to the nomenclature unification in the clinical analysis.

The vast heterogeneity of local nomenclatures that the company had to deal with to exchange data with its interlocutors, required the consumption of a high amount of resources, those lasts, the more and more specialized.

It was in this precise moment when the possibility to externalize the treatment of this information was identified as a business oportunity. This was the starting point: offering a specialized service in the laboratory test alignement to health institutions. Working their processes in an integrated way, this could allow the externalization to maintain necessary terminology for the information exchange among the interlocutors.

With the collaboration of a reference laboratory as our initial user, through thecreation of a data base and the development of a tool able to align all the terms, both entrepreneurs covered the strategic sides of the project: technic (biomedicine) and IT (computer sciente), creating BITAC. Our main services were data unification to clinical analysis laboratories or health institutions.

The implementation of laboratory data in EHR (Electronic Health Record) environments, provides an added complexity due to the volume and variability of the analitic determinations.. On the other hand, one of the final goals of laboratory data implementation has to be the comparability of results through the visualization of evolution charts.

In order to compare results obtained from different clinical episodes, health centers, regions or countries, it is absolutely necessary the use of standards that ensure the exact identification of the resolution done. A mistake in the identification can easily drive the doctor to an erroneous interpretation.

After a rigurous study of health standards in the clinical analysis environment, BITAC commited to LOINC® (Logical Observation Identifiers Names and Codes) as its reference vocabulary.

Later on, a collaboration within the frame of a public health project, opened us a new field with plenty of opportunities: the Electronic Health Record (EHR).

In this kind of projects, focused on achieving a unique Clinical Record for each pacient through electronic means, arises the necessity to unify and adopt standards for heterogenious vocabulary. This is the field where BITAC’s services could perfectly fit in.

In this new environment, we came accross with other clinical vocabularies designed to collect all the clinical actions with the maximum possible details: CIE9, CIE10, NANDA, NIC,NOC and above all SNOMED CT.
